Below are a few tips for handling the most common problems you may run into when accessing our Jukebox programs. Every computer is different and we cannot predict all problems in advance. If our instructions below are not helpful or you continue to have access problems, please call us. We can easily talk you through setting up your system.

Browser Requirements
The Jukebox Projects will work with all browsers, however the latest version of Firefox is recommended for best results.

Audio Requirements
To listen to the audio files on these pages, you will need a streaming audio player that can handle MP3 files, and there are LOTS of them. Here's a quick list of Players, divided by system type, that will work with our audio:

Windows: Macintosh: Linux / Unix:
Audio for MAC users: **SPECIAL ALERT**
  1. Click here to download Flip4Mac.
  2. On the Flip4Mac website, click on the Download Now button to begin downloading the latest version of Flip4Mac WMV.
  3. Follow the installation instructions provided by the website.
  4. Flip4Mac will now be installed in your Applications folder on your harddrive. It will run in the background and will allow Windows Media content to play automatically in the sound program you have set as your default player for Internet content.
Other Macintosh Audio Problems
  1. Click the Apple Icon.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Select Start Up Disk.
  4. Select Classic or OS9.
  5. Click the Restart button. Your computer will restart using OS9 so older programs and applications can be utilized.
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Select Preferences from the drop-down Explorer Menu (in older versions of Explorer Preferences may be under the Edit Menu).
  3. On the left side of the Preferences pop-up window, expand Receiving Files and select File Helpers .
  4. On the ride side of the Preferences pop-up window, scroll down until you find MP3 files (.mp3 is the extension).
  5. Select Windows Media Player (with the .mp3 extension) and click the Change button. The Edit File Helper pop-up window is displayed.
  6. In the File Type section, select the Browse button.
  7. Browse for the Windows Media Player folder (it is likely to be in the Applications folder).
  8. Select the Windows Media Player icon within the Windows Media Player folder and click the Open button. This should automatically add text to the File Type and File Creator fields of the Edit File Helper pop-up window.
  9. In the Handling section of the Edit File Helper pop-up window, select the View With Application from the How to Handle drop-down menu.
  10. Click the OK button, and again, click the OK button.
  11. Return to the Jukebox Project and test an audio file.
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click on Tools.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click on Network (left side of the screen).
  5. Select Protocol Helpers.
  6. Click Add.
  7. Next to helper, type mms.
  8. Choose Windows Media Player.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Return to the Jukebox Project and test an audio file.
  1. Open Netscape.
  2. Select Preferences from the Netscape Menu.
  3. On the left side of the Preferences pop-up window, expand Navigator and select Helper Applications .
  4. On the right side of the Preferences pop-up window, scroll down until you find MP3 files (.mp3 is the extension).
  5. Select Windows Media Player (with the .mp3 extension) and click the Edit button.
  6. Change from the "Plug-in to" the Windows Media Player Application (you might have to search your hard drive for the Windows Media Player application).
  7. Do this for each of the Windows Media File listings.

Audio for PC users:
If you are using a PC and your computer cannot recognize the .mp3 file type, it will ask you what program you would like to open the file in. Choose Windows Media Player or your standard audio player such as WinAmp. If you are using a dial-up modem and experience delays due to buffering, follow the instructions below.

Dial-up Modem:
The audio files in these programs streams from a Microsoft Media Server (mms). If you are using a dial-up modem, you may experience delays due to buffering. To change the buffering settings in Windows Media Player:

  1. Open Windows Media Player
  2. Under Tools, select Options
  3. Select the Performance Tab
  4. Choose your Modem Connection Speed from the drop down menu
  5. Under Network Buffering, select the bullet to Buffer and change the Seconds of Content to 60
  6. Click apply and OK
  7. Test the audio file. If necessary, repeat the steps and increase the Seconds of Content

Monitor Settings
If you cannot see all of the content on your monitor, you can change the monitor display settings to a higher resolution.

Special Fonts
Some jukeboxes, like the Kiana Village History Project or the North Slope Project Jukebox use instances of the Inupiaq font. Instructions for downloading and installing the font for PCs and Macs are at http://www.alaskool.org/Language/inupiaqpb/getfont.htm.
