Sarah Simon

H93-36-04, H93-36-05

Sarah Simon was born in April 1912. Her parents were from Allakaket. She grew up there and around Wiseman/Bettles. When she married Lee Simon they moved to Hughes, where he worked at the Hog River Gold Mine. Sarah had polio as a young woman which left her without the use of one leg, but this never slowed her down. She had five children of her own, raised a step-daughter, and adopted three children when she was in her late forties. She would spend all summer at fish camp near Hughes putting up fish for the winter for her large family and their dogs. Sarah and Lee moved back to Allakaket when they were older to be closer to their children. Lee passed way around 1988. In 2006, Sarah is still alive and living in the Fairbanks area. These recordings were made for the Koyukok River History Project.
