Hazel Strassburg

Mike Spindler and Clinton Brown interviewed Hazel Strassburg in Galena on November 26, 2002. The interview was edited and produced by Clinton Brown.

HAZEL STRASSBURG was born in 1926 in Galena. Her father was Charlie Evans, and mother was Elizabeth Evans from Koyukuk. Except for some brief times in Koyukuk and Nulato, Hazel has lived her whole life in Galena. Hazel married Harvey Strassburg, an FAA employee, in Galena on June 15, 1945. They raised three children, Joanne, Wayne, and Sharlene. Hazel is known throughout the region as a very independent subsistence hunter and fisher. She tends several fish nets in summer, runs small traplines in winter, and often goes on long snowmobile hunting trips by herself. Hazel is often seen driving her four-wheeler, and when snow cover exists, her small snowmobile, all around Galena and the surrounding trails. She has been, and continues to be a very active subsistence harvester even into her late 70's.

The goal of Raven's Story is to record elders' stories, observations, and experiences relating to wildlife, fish, and subsistence in the Koyukuk and middle Yukon areas of interior Alaska. This Raven's Story was produced by Clinton Brown at public radio station KIYU-AM in Galena, Alaska, with the support of Louden Tribal Council and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
