DAVID DAVID was born in 1932 on the Upper Koyukuk River near South Fork, upriver from the village of Allakaket. His parents were Southfork David and Eva Adams of Stevens Village. David's father died when he was young, leaving him to be raised by his mother and sisters. Growing up he split time between Allakaket and camp, learning to live a subsistence lifestyle from his uncle William William and other family members. He met and later married Kitty Nictune of Alatna and the two raised a large family in Allakaket while living a mostly subsistence lifestyle of trapping, hunting, fishing and building cabins. He also spent some time working at mining camps near Manley. David was an accomplished dog musher, racing in several races in the Interior, including one fourth place finish at the Open North American in Fairbanks, before retiring and passing his team onto his son in the 1990's. KITTY DAVID was raised on the Alatna River with six sisters and two brothers. Her mother, Cora Nictune died during childbirth when Kitty was just nine years old, leaving her father, Oscar Nictune to raise the family. She married and raised a large family with her husband, David, and has also worked as a firefighter and cook, among other jobs. The goal of Raven's Story is to record elders' stories, observations, and experiences relating to wildlife, fish, and subsistence in the Koyukuk and middle Yukon areas of interior Alaska. This Raven's Story was produced by Clinton Brown at public radio station KIYU-AM in Galena, Alaska, with the support of Louden Tribal Council and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. |
