Agnes Valle was born on Kodiak Island in 1935 and came to Sitka in 1952 for tuberculosis treatment. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse, and moved to Yakutat in 1961. People knew her from the hospital, so came to her for medical assistance. Agnes treated patients even though she was not paid. Eventually, the Yakutat Health Council selected her as a paid health aide. She worked until the mid-1970s. She was then a teacher aide for twenty-seven years. Agnes is known as “Sugar." In this interview, she talks about the nursing training she received, being a volunteer health aide, dealing with the stresses and demands of the job, babies she delivered, some of the emergency cases she handled, and the joys and hardships of health aide work. Due to technical difficulties, a portion of the interview was not recorded and the interview had to start again, so there is some redundancy in the discussion.
