Eleanor Oakes

To Nome Interviews

Eleanor Oakes

H2004-17-23

Eleanor Oakes, a retired public health nurse for the Seward Peninsula region, talked with Karen Brewster on November 8, 2005 in Nome, Alaska. Eleanor came to Alaska as a nurse in 1951 and has lived and worked in Nome since 1953. Mostly she worked out of the hospital, but sometimes made trips to the villages. Eleanor is a private person who had to be strongly persuaded to do this interview, so she has chosen not to make it available on the Internet. In this interview, she talks about coming to Alaska, her early nursing jobs, what conditions were like at the Nome hospital, the duties of a public health nurse, and how she has seen rural health care change over the years.
This interview is only available at the Rasmuson Library, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
